A man was charged yesterday with trafficking nearly 29,000 ecstasy pills, which were found in an apartment in Qawra.

Jason Cassar, 32, from Qawra, was charged with trafficking 28,900 ecstasy pills. Police Inspector Dennis Theuma, who prosecuted, told the court that the police are investigating a ring of drug-traffickers in connection with this haul, one of the biggest Malta has ever seen.

The pills were discovered in a flat in Tourist Street, Qawra, following several days of investigation and surveillance.

The police said they are not excluding the possibility that more people will be charged in the coming days in connection with the same drug find. An 18-year-old woman from Rabat is also assisting the police with their investigations. Mr Cassar denied the charges brought against him. Magistrate Miriam Hayman refused his request for bail and he was remanded in custody.

Police Inspector Dennis Theuma prosecuted and Dr Jose Herrera appeared for the accused.
