A 29-year-old Libyan man was jailed for five years and fined Lm1,000 yesterday after he was found guilty of trafficking in heroin.

Marwan El Kurbo was found guilty of dealing in the drug during the operative period of a suspended sentence four years ago.

Policemen who testified during the compilation of evidence against El Kurbo said he had been trafficking in the drug outside the detox centre. Having received information that the man was selling drugs at City Gate in Valletta, the police had gone there and found him in possession of a bag containing sachets of heroin.

El Kurbo was jailed for a total of five years after the magistrate ordered that a one-year suspended sentence be added to his four-year jail term for drug trafficking.

Police superintendent Neil Harrison and police inspectors Norbert Ciappara and Ramon Mercieca prosecuted.
