Workers should never forget their past and should always continue to seek better working and social conditions by placing solidarity as the main value of their life, the Malta Labour Party deputy leader for party affairs, Michael Falzon said yesterday.

In a message for Worker’s Day, Dr Falzon urged workers to remember what they had gained over the years with the support of the Labour Party and the trade unions. He said that Nationalist government policies were putting jobs at risk and this led a number of workers not to speak up for their rights as they were afraid of ending up unemployed.

Today, there were workers who cannot join a union although this was a constitutional right, while others worked on definite contracts. There were workers who still received the minimum wage, and others who worked in dangerous situations without adequate protection. There were workers who were employed as part-timers but ended working a full-time job without receiving the benefits of that.

The Nationalist Party was doing nothing to stop this, Dr Falzon said. On the other hand, the Labour Party would work to attract more investment and safeguard the rights that they worked so hard to attain.
