The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) marked World Press Freedom Day 2007, falling today, by calling on the Maltese government to issue the much-promised white paper on freedom of information as soon as possible.

“The government had pledged that the white paper was going to be published by the end of last year. There had been some delay, even from our side, in giving our feedback to the draft white paper that has already been circulated, yet a comprehensive Freedom of Information Act is needed to put Malta truly at par with its partners in the EU and combat the culture of secrecy pervading the public sector,” said Malcolm J. Naudi, chairman.

The IGM presented its position on the proposed Freedom of Information Act and teamed up with the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative to present a joint reaction some weeks ago, and expects them to be included in the draft legislation.

“Our proposals are intended to provide Malta with a law that gives a general right to information held by the executive and administration branches of government, thus promoting transparency and accountability,” said Mr Naudi.

“A Freedom of Information Act is an important step towards protecting the individual citizen and achieving fuller press freedom in Malta,” he added.

This year’s theme for World Press Freedom Day, organised by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) is “Press Freedom, Safety of Journalists and Impunity”.
