Two brothers yesterday pleaded guilty to seriously injuring a man and slightly injuring another when a fight broke out during the celebrations marking Hamrun Spartans’ promotion to the Premier League.

Marco Cassar, 33, from Bugibba and his brother Claudio Cassar, 21, from Marsa, pleaded guilty to seriously injuring Sandro Cauchi from Mgarr on Saturday evening in High Street, Hamrun.

They also pleaded guilty to slightly injuring Thomas Pellikano from Birkirkara, assaulting and threatening a police officer, breaching the peace, disobeying police orders and swearing in public.

Police Inspector Mario Tonna said the incident took place during the events celebrating Hamrun Spartans’ promotion to the Premier League. He said all was fine until all of a sudden, “a war broke out” and the two injured people had to be admitted to hospital after being hit by glass bottles.

Before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, the two brothers pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them. She put off the case to Monday for judgement. In the meantime, she granted them bail against a Lm100 personal guarantee.

Police Inspector Mario Tonna prosecuted. Dr Kris Balzan appeared for Marco Cassar while Dr Jose Herrera appeared for Claudio Cassar. Dr Malcolm Mifsud appeared parte civile for the injured parties.
