A committee set up to militate against the proposed recycling plant at Marsascala has submitted a complaint to Ombudsman Joseph Said Pullicino calling on him to investigate their case.

The committee is made up of representatives of seven local councils, of the Labour Party and Alternattiva Demokratika, and of seven voluntary organisations.

It pointed out to the Ombudsman that there were various cases pending against the proposed development, including a Constitutional case and a petition which has been accepted by the Petitions Committee of the European Parliament.

The committee said that in February it requested a meeting with the auditor of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to discuss the proposed plant with him.

It added that it got to know that the term of office of the auditor, Joseph Falzon, had expired on 23 February.

To date, the committee pointed out, the auditor’s office was not functioning, though the auditor was there to defend the citizen.

Because of this situation, the committee said, it could not present its case and it called on the Ombudsman to investigate the matter.
