A police sergeant was injured after being assaulted while responding to an incident in St Julian's early on Sunday morning.

The police said the incident happened at around 4am when police officers intervened in an argument involving four Maltese nationals - two men and two women - in St George's Road.

According to the police, officers were attempting to calm the situation when one of the men continued acting aggressively and was placed under arrest.

Police said that at that point, another Maltese man, who was not involved in the original argument but is believed to have known the arrested individual, allegedly punched the sergeant in the head.

The officer defended himself as the assault took place.

As officers attempted to stop the attack, a commotion ensued during which the second man sustained injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment.

The injured police sergeant was taken to hospital for treatment for the head injuries he sustained.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
