Court: Elderly Man fined Lm2,500 for involvement in traffic accident

A 70-year-old man was yesterday fined Lm2,500 after pleading guilty to seriously injuring two people and damaging a car when he was involved in a traffic accident while under the influence of alcohol.

The court how Philip Zammit Briffa, from Balzan, was driving his car while drunk when he crashed into a car and hit two people, seriously injuring them. He pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.

Handing down her judgement, Magistrate Edwina Grima took note of the fact that it was the first time that Zammit Briffa committed a crime. She also remarked that the injuries sustained by the two victims were serious, especially one of them who was over 80 years old.

The magistrate therefore fined the elderly man Lm2,500 and disqualified him from obtaining a driving licence for a period of six months.
