Malta’s changeover to the euro was recently the topic of the day at San Bastjan Primary School in Qormi.

This came as a result of a presentation organised by Bank of Valletta’s branch in Qormi for the school’s more senior students. Addressing the students, Peter Sant, senior economics officer at BOV explained the various stages involved up to the adoption of the euro as Malta’s official currency. Mr Sant explained the steps being undertaken at both a national level as well as within the BOV Group itself, which should lead to a seamless conversion process.

The presentation also covered the responsibilities of the Central Bank of Malta, the European Central Bank, the significance of the common currency and the benefits to Malta, the euro currency, its denominations and features and the use of the euro in the world.

“We are pleased to have taken this initiative in collaboration with the San Bastjan Primary School,” said Noel Abela, manager of the BOV Branch in Qormi. “Bank of Valletta is working hand in hand with the National Euro Changeover Committee (NECC) in an effort to create awareness about the Euro and the Euro Changeover process and this initiative ties in well with our efforts to ensure that the migration to the new currency is as smooth as possible,” added Mr Abela. He said that this collaboration between the bank and the primary school of the locality underlined the strong involvement that BOV has within the communities in which it operates.

While the senior members of the school were following the presentation, Cikkurillu, the popular mascot of the BOV Young Savers Account, kept himself busy entertaining the younger members of San Bastjan Primary School by visiting their classrooms.
