Labour spokesman for Public Transport and Roads Charles Buhagiar called yesterday for Roads and Urban Develop-ment Minister Jesmond Mugliett to take political responsibility and submit his resignation.

Mr Buhagiar said it was unacceptable that a request for amnesty be made for public officials who had been found guilty and are no longer allowed to work in the public sector to take up their former jobs.

It was even more unacceptable, he said, considering that these officials had been found guilty of corruption and failing in their duty.

“It is shameful that Minister Mugliett is trying to get around the court’s decision and the public sector regulations, bearing in mind that these men were found guilty,” he said.

Furthermore, he added, if Mr Mugliett did not resign in the name of accountability, transparency and good governance, then Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi should remove him from office.
