Vikings Sailing Club Sailing Marathon 2007

Malta Independent Thursday, 6 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Vikings Sailing Club is organising a sailing marathon at its premises at Haywharf from Saturday at 10am to Sunday at 6pm. Young sailors are raising funds for the Equal Partners Foundation, by sailing non-stop in Marsamxett Harbour for 32 hours. Equal Partners is a parent-run, non-profit foundation providing support programmes to over 180 children and adults with disabilities and/or learning difficulties. It aspires towards a more independent and meaningful life for these persons within an inclusive society.

The Vikings Sailing Club is offering a marvellous opportunity to try out dinghy sailing with qualified instructors against a donation. The public will have a chance to experience the thrill of dinghy sailing while helping out in a good cause. Other family-friendly activities on the Saturday night will include Holy Mass at 6.30pm followed by a barbeque.

VSC was set up in 1984, and with over 200 members, it has a very active social calendar with an open and friendly atmosphere.

Sailing is a very healthy and fulfilling sport or hobby suitable for all. VSC lays heavy emphasis on children and promotes sailing as an activity that teaches positive life skills such as teamwork, self-reliance, decisiveness, navigation, survival and a sense of healthy competition.

VSC is an accredited training centre for Skola Sport of Kunsill Malti Ghall-iSport, the Ministry of Education’s Youth Training Scheme. It offers sailing courses throughout the whole year as well as introductory sessions.

The club is situated near the AFM Maritime squadron, down the hill from the Public Library in Floriana.
