Malta Independent Sunday, 9 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Heritage Malta is extending the date of the exhibition of sculptures by Antonio Sciortino. The exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Gozo at the Exhibition Hall in St Francis Square, Victoria to mark the 60th anniversary of Sciortino’s death.

Sciortino was born in Zebbug in 1879. After completing his studies in Malta he continued his studies in Rome where he was appointed director of the Accademia Britannica. From 1937 until his death, he was a curator of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta. He developed an original style that drew the admiration of many and brought him commissions in Russia, Brazil and USA. In 1903 he created his finest masterpiece, Les Gavroches, a copy of which is in the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta.

The exhibition will run until 16 September and is open between 8am and 4.30pm on weekdays, Saturdays from 8am to 12pm and 1 to 4pm and Sundays from 9am to 12 pm.
