The Malta Union of Teachers yesterday appealed to the authorities to open an inquiry into the guidance teachers selection process, after it said it received several allegations from its members.

The MUT expressed concern that this year’s selection process may not have been transparent.

According to normal practices, guidance teachers who would not have obtained the necessary qualifications should be interviewed every two years; however, the union alleged that only a small number of these teachers were actually interviewed this year.

MUT added that it also received reports that some qualified guidance teachers, who were supposedly automatically eligible for the job, were sent for to be interviewed.

The union said this confusing situation had created tension among teachers and could provide for a dangerous precedent. It added that the Education Division had not yet taken any form of action in this regard.
