The Criminal Court has ordered the re-arrest of a man who is wanted in Italy in connection with human trafficking.

Last Friday, a court, presided over by magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna ruled in favour of the extradition of Emanuel Borg, who is wanted in Modica, but that the said extradition should be postponed pending the outcome of a drug-related court case in which he is an accused.

Magistrate Apap Bologna had granted bail to Mr Borg, binding him with a Lm5,000 deposit and that he signed daily at a local police station.

The Attorney General’s office then filed for revocation of bail. Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano pointed out that the magistrates’ court as a court of committal had ruled in favour of Mr Borg’s extradition and was bound by law to order that he be held in custody until he was sent to Italy.

This applied, said Chief Justice Degaetano, even though the extradition was postponed.

For this reason the judge upheld the Attorney General’s request and ordered Mr Borg’s re-arrest.

Police Inspectors Sandro Zarb and Noel Cutajar prosecuted while Dr Joseph Giglio appeared for Mr Borg.
