Heritage Malta held a Heritage Trail on the theme of Caravaggio as part of the activities which it is organizing to mark the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the famous painter in Malta.

The Heritage Trail started in Valletta, where the participants visited St John's Co-Cathedral to view two of Caravaggio's masterpieces, the St Gerome and the Martyrdom of St John the Baptist. Afterwards the participants went to Vittoriosa, which was the seat of The Inquisition Tribunal in Malta when Caravaggio was here. History came alive with a re-enactment at the Inquisitor's Palace where Caravaggio himself was sitting on the witness bench giving his version of facts. The participants then went to Fort St Angelo where they saw the place where Caravaggio was imprisoned and from where he escaped to Italy.

The Heritage Trail ended at the Museum Fine Arts in Valletta where participants got a brief overview of the different ways of interpreting Caravaggio's style by the artists who followed his artistic legacy known as the Caravaggisti.

The activities will continue with an exhibition of original paintings by or attributed to Caravaggio at the National Museum of Archaeology between the end of September and the end of November. The exhibition called L’Immagine Del Divino will be inaugurated by President Edward Fenech Adami on Saturday 29 September.
