55 New volunteers to give their service to the public through Appogg services

Malta Independent Monday, 24 September 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

A total of 55 new volunteers have completed training and received certificates in order to join two of the services within Agenzija Appogg. Of the new recruits 24 will be giving their service to Supportline 179, while 31 will be joining Programm Ulied Darna (PUD). These services are run by professionally trained volunteers who are constantly supervised and supported by APPOGG employees.

In 2006, over 12,000 hours of voluntary work were dedicated to the Supportline 179 service of Agenzija Appogg. Supportline 179, a 24-hour service, is the national helpline dealing with problems, including domestic violence, rape, child abuse, suicide, loneliness, homelessness, mental health, emotional difficulties and behavioural problems among others.

Within Supportline 179 there are currently 87 volunteers, with each volunteer dedicating 12 hours a month of voluntary work towards the service.

In 2006, over 5,000 hours of voluntary work were also dedicated for Programm Ulied Darna, an Appogg service that offers practical support to families whose children are at great social risk and who require support to prevent crises and other family problems.

Over 80 volunteers offer their time towards Programm Ulied Darna, who on average dedicate a total of 400 hours of service a month.

Voluntary work within the social welfare services aims at supporting people in need and at bringing about change in people's lives. The relationship that the volunteer builds with the families is different to the one the professional has with the family. These relationships are complementary and through their support, care and understanding the family is enabled to enhance their potential.

Supportline 179 is the national 24-hour freephone helpline run by a team of professionally trained volunteers offered by Agenzija Appogg. It provides immediate, confidential support to callers of any age, who require assistance, both in day-to-day and crisis situations. It also provides information on social welfare services and referral systems to those callers who require further assistance. Forming part of the helpline is a hotline service offered to report child abuse over the Internet and to promote Internet safety.

Programm Ulied Darna is a service in which volunteers offer time, skills, friendship, material support, information and practical help to facilitate the life of families who are under stress in their own homes in order to promote the enjoyment of family life.

Speaking during a social event for the volunteers, Joe Gerada, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services said that the way a public agency such as Appogg worked with teams of volunteers was an example of good practice and therefore he called on other public institutions such as hospitals and schools to follow on this model. He said that the voluntary sector had a major role to play in the provision of public services. Their commitment and competence was an indispensable form of social capital that the country could not do without.
