Celebrations tied with the 400th Anniversary of the Santa Marija Parish in Mosta started on 16 September with a cortege from the Sacred Heart Oratory to the Rotunda followed by a concelebrated Mass and ending on the church parvis when the façade was colourfully lit with prominence given to the years 1608 and 2008.
The two main bands of Mosta took part and played as one. In attendance were all the Mosta born priests as well as representatives of all religious, social, civic and political organisations. For the concelebrated Mass the Archpriest, Fr Mario Tong was assisted by the last two living ex-archpriests Monsingnors Bartilmew Bezzina and Joe Carabott.
In a short homily, Fr Tong stressed on the importance that we reflect on and appreciate what was done by our forefathers during the last 399 years. Apart from building a majestic Mosta Rotunda they also saw to the nurturing of a truly Christian community. He said it is just as important that we now look ahead and whilst celebrating we should focus on building a much stronger Christian community in Mosta.
Mosta was elevated to Parish status by Bishop Tumas Gargallo on 16 September 1608.
