The second phase of the Wied Inċita project has been completed, the Environment Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry said that this phase forms part of a long-term plan to transform Wied Inċita into one of Malta’s largest public parks, covering an area of more than 90,000 square metres.

The second phase builds on the first part of the project, which opened to the public in December 2024, with the aim of regenerating more previously unused land for the benefit of families.

“We are making more open spaces part of people's everyday lives. Wied Inċita is an example of how land that had been left unused for years is being transformed into an open space for everyone to enjoy. We have now opened the first and second phases, and our ambition is to continue expanding this site. We want Wied Inċita to become one of Malta’s most beautiful public parks. This is an investment in people's quality of life and in the way we want our country to develop,” said Minister Miriam Dalli during a site visit, accompanied by Ambjent Malta officials and representatives of the Ħ’Attard Local Council.

Works carried out by Ambjent Malta during the second phase included landscaping, the restoration of rubble walls, improvements to pathways, the installation of benches and other public amenities, as well as new irrigation systems.

As part of the project, hundreds of trees and shrubs were also planted, including oak, pine, carob and myrtle, to enhance biodiversity and create a more natural environment.

Ambjent Malta Director General Herman Galea explained that the works were carried out with particular attention to preserving the natural characteristics of Wied Inċita, while making the area more accessible and safer for the public. “Through this second phase, we have continued to breathe new life into Wied Inċita while safeguarding its natural environment. This is another step in our efforts to create a larger green space that everyone can enjoy,” Galea said.

With the additional 7,000 square metres, Wied Inċita now offers 27,000 square metres of public open space, equivalent to the size of approximately four full-sized football pitches. This marks the third new public open space opened during the current legislature.
