Wara l-Hajt tas-Sejjieh

6, 7 October at St James Cavalier, Valletta

A musical in Maltese, Wara l-Hajt tas-Sejjieh targets illegal waste, environmental vandalism and disrespect towards our own flora and fauna, apart from global warming. Curtain Raiser’s one-act musical involves live music, installation costumes, stilt walking, juggling, aerial work and a realistic set. Entrance is free of charge.

The story features nature’s characters who declare war against mankind in order to teach them a lesson; however some of the characters do not like the idea of war as they are sure there are other ways of making humans aware that nature is important. The characters include the Maltese lizard, the prickly pear tree, the thyme plant, the snail, the Maltese national plant Widnet il-Bahar and the hajt tas-sejjieh.

There will be multiple shows starting from 6pm on Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal, for which patrons do not need to book tickets but can collect them on their way in at the reception desk. Wara l-Hajt tas-Sejjieh will be performed at 5.30pm and 8pm on Sunday, for which it is advisable to book.

Steel Magnolias

12-14 October at Manoel Theatre, Valletta

The MADC kicks off the theatre season with a hilarious yet touching play boasting an all-female cast including Polly March, Nanette Brimmer, Charlotte Grech, Pia Zammit, Isabel Warrington, Katherine Brown and Emily Jones. A comedy-drama by Robert Harling set in Louisiana about the bond forged between a group of Southern women, in which the action centres around Truvy’s hairdressing salon and beauty parlour. Truvy’s new assistant is Annelle, rather bizarrely, is not sure if she is married or not. The women who visit the salon include M’Lynn, the local social worker who will do anything for her daughter Shelby (whose wardrobe consists only of the colour pink), eccentric millionaire Clairee and Ouiser who loves her dog Rhett more than any human.

Doubt

12-14, 19 - 21 October at St James Cavalier, Valletta

Masquerade Theatre Company presents the superb play Doubt by John Patrick Shanley. Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision when she suspects a popular priest of inappropriate behavior with a student. Armed with nothing more than a resolute belief in her suspicion, the nun instigates a relentless campaign to remove the priest, with the help of a subordinate nun and the student’s tormented mother.

Doubt won the 2005 Tony Award® for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize. Its staging in Malta promises to be equally successful under the direction of Anthony Bezzina and a cast that includes Monica Attard, Faye Paris, Malcolm Galea and Evelyn Duah from the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK.

Caravaggio: L-Inkjesta

19-21 October at Teatru Manoel, Valletta

A dramatic representation of Caravaggio’s life and art seen through the eyes of his admirers and critics. This original play in Maltese, written and directed by Joe Friggieri, is sponsored by Heritage Malta.

Orchestral Concert

The National Orchestra, conducted by Maestro John Galea, presents an orchestral concert to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The programme includes works by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Giuseppe Verdi, Alexander Arutunian and John Galea.

An exhibition of dance genres, which is part of the Notte Bianca activities, with shows taking place every hour from 8pm until 11pm.

Mavin Khoo: Solo Bharata

9 October at Manoel Theatre, Valletta

International Bharata Natyam soloist Mavin Khoo returns to Malta to perform in an evening of classical Bharata Nhatyam featuring live music by international vocalist Pushkala Gopal. This event is organised in collaboration with the British Council.

Concert by Varsovia Symphony Orchestra

15 October at Manoel Theatre, Valletta

Varsovia Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Christopher Warren-Green, featuring the pianist Maria Joao Pires and the violinist Augustin Dumay, perform works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Felix Mendelssohn.

Mediterranean Vocal Studio Malta Showcase

23 October at Manoel Theatre, Valletta

Local artists showcase their training in the American Legendary Speech level singing technique. Guests include leading personalities from the local music industry, Sir Harry Cowell and Lou Mullen from UK record label PNC.

Manoel Theatre Swings with GO

26-18 October at Manoel Theatre, Valletta

A concert of swing standards arranged to a modern jazz flare, performed by a 16-piece big band with vocalists Nadine Axisa and Daniel Cauchi. Under the musical direction of Sigmund Mifsud, the programme includes numbers from Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall and Michael Buble.

Veni Vidi Plastik

6 October in Ordinance Street, Valletta

As part of Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal, Kinemastik presents a full night of the most influential music videos ever. Video art represents an important facet of the short form and many contemporary cutting edge filmmakers have used video art as a springboard to a successful career. Veni Vidi Plastik will have its own pavilion, set up for the occasion by Reasons For Living. The event starts from 7.30pm till late. Entrance is free.

Analogue - Pioneering Video from the UK, Canada and Poland (1968 - 88)

Through a series of exhibitions, screenings, performances and discussions, Analogue aims to illuminate the early histories of artists’ video, linking the work of artists in the UK, Canada and Poland in order to broaden an understanding of how, in the course of 30 years, a versatile and politically charged medium made the transition from the margins to the mainstream of contemporary practice.

This is the second edition of Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal, an all night long celebration of arts and culture starting from 6pm onwards until the early hours of Sunday. The public is invited to re-discover the capital city, Valletta, through performances, exhibitions, shows, visual installations, parades, tours and re-enactments. Museums, theatres, arts and cultural centres, libraries, churches and chapels, historical sites, auberges, cinemas, streets, squares and gardens will be holding events of different genres making the arts accessible to all. On this night, for the fourth consecutive time, all of Birgu will be lit by candlelight. An event which promises to be an extensive night of arts, exhibitions, performances, re-enactments and tours. This year’s theme is World War II.

Caravaggio Educational Workshop

The first in the series of educational workshops connected to the Caravaggio: l’Immagine del Divino exhibition.
