Around 42,000 passengers are expected to travel through Malta International Airport on both 13 and 20 August, with the two dates forecast to be the busiest travel days of the year, the airport said.

Passenger numbers are expected to peak during the first half of the day throughout August, prompting Malta International Airport to advise travellers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and to allow enough time for their journey.

The airport also warned that volcanic ash carried over the Maltese Islands from Mount Etna could continue to cause disruptions, urging passengers to check for updates before travelling.

Despite the expected increase in passenger traffic, travellers are being reminded that arriving two hours before their scheduled departure should be sufficient to complete airport procedures and reach their gate on time.

Passengers travelling with hand luggage can bring liquids in containers of up to two litres through security, while electronic devices can remain inside hand luggage during screening. Power banks rated up to 100Wh are generally permitted in cabin baggage, while those above 100Wh are not allowed. Passengers are also limited to two power banks in their hand luggage.

The airport has introduced several changes and facilities ahead of the summer peak. A new WHSmith convenience outlet has opened in the Check-In Hall, while the pre-security area has been expanded to include 10 gates. New food options have also been introduced, with Fuwamai joining the existing outlets in the Food Court.

The airport pharmacy has also extended its opening hours and is now open every day from 7am until midnight, including Sundays and public holidays.

Passengers already through security can also find new brands in the DUFRY retail area, including Charlotte Tilbury, Creed and Victoria's Secret.

Travellers are being encouraged to keep an eye on the airport's flight information screens for updates and gate announcements. Passengers travelling to non-Schengen destinations are advised to clear border control as soon as their gate becomes available.

Free water refill points are available near Gates 10 and 17, while families can make use of a dedicated parental room, free activity books and a family security lane designed to make the screening process easier.

The latest figures come as Malta International Airport continues to handle record levels of traffic. In 2025, the airport welcomed more than 10 million passengers, connecting Malta to 111 airports across 37 markets through 34 airline partners.
