Agenzija Appogg’s emergency shelter for women, Ghabex , has with the help of HSBC Cares For Children Fund (HCCF) installed a portable swimming pool at its premises, to provide victims of violence and their children with some relief during the summer months.

The pool was necessary because women and children staying at the shelter are apprehensive about going to the beach due to fear of their persecutors. The shelter provides 24-hour crises intervention to women and their children who are victims of domestic violence and who need immediate protection.

After a three month stay at the shelter, they would then move to alternative accommodation. The Appogg staff at Ghabex support these women and their children daily, and help them structure a future plan.

HCCF chairperson Catherine Gonzi said that HCCF were very sensitive towards these women and children, who are experiencing hardships and challenges in attempting to leave abusive relationships. She hoped that the HCCF contribution would alleviate some of their burdens.

Mr. Joe Gerada, Foundation for Social Welfare Services Chief Executive Officer, said that without such support the agency would not be able to fund such projects. He also emphasised that women and children needed better legal

support.
