For the second year running, Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal is offering visitors to Valletta late night viewing of a wide range of exhibitions and galleries. This annual event is giving exposure to a variety of Maltese talent and skills, in particular to art and crafts. Moreover, it is also offering a platform for philanthropic organisations.
One such case is the YMCA, which supports the positive development of youths and offers a spectrum of social work services to people who are underprivileged and socially disadvantaged.
Valletta Then and Now

YMCA will be exhibiting some interesting past and present images of Valletta entitled Valletta Then & Now at The President’s Palace courtyard from 6.00pm onwards. The non-government, non-profit organisation is currently working on the Old Valletta Project. YMCA aims to create a digital library of photography and images of historical and archaeological sites in Valletta as well as creating 3D maps, 3D models and comparative studies between past and present.
Through the realisation of this project, YMCA Homeless will be able to benefit from the funds collected through sales of DVDs and other multimedia software. Entrance for the YMCA Valletta Then and Now at The President’s Palace courtyard is free, but a donation would be greatly appreciated to help fund the YMCA Homeless. Visitors will also be able to find out how the Old Valletta Project will help the work carried out by YMCA Homeless.
Malta School of
Art at Casa Brunet
The Baroque building of Casa Brunet will be hosting an art exhibition by the Malta School of Art tutors and students. The exhibition will be open from 6.00pm till midnight. A group of students will be painting still life during the exhibition.
Il-Bottegin ta’ San Martin exhibition
From 6.00pm onwards, Il-Bottegin ta’ San Martin in Old Bakery Street will present an exhibition together with hands-on experience and live demonstrations by artists.
Auberge d’Italie
House of the Ministry for Tourism and Culture, Auberge d’Italie will be hosting a number of activities on Notte Bianca Lejl Imdawwal. These include three exhibitions and a recital by members of the National Orchestra. The National Orchestra Ensembles, namely the String, the Wind and the Brass will be presenting a series of concerts to visitors visiting the Auberge d’Italie. The concerts will be held at 6.30pm, 7.15pm, 8.00pm, 8.45pm; 9.30pm and 10.15pm.
World War II – witness to war by Stan Fraser
Over sixty years have passed since the end of the Second World War, and now for the first time in Malta, British war veteran, Stan Fraser, presents selections of his personal photo and film collection. This special exhibition of wartime Malta as seen through the eyes of a soldier is entitled, Witness to War – A British gunner’s photo and film documentation of WWII in Malta will be open at Auberge d’Italie from 6.00pm onwards.
Witness to War presents original photos and 8mm film footage of Malta and Gozo taken between 1941 and 1943. The exhibition includes images of Maltese, rural life and photos of Grand Harbour and Valletta, a city under siege. Stan Fraser, a talented hobby photographer and filmographer exhibits 50 poster-size images of his Malta wartime photo collection.
The photo and video materials for the exhibition are being prepared and brought to Malta by Veronica Galea on behalf of Stan Fraser. Witness to War is made possible through the support of the Ministry for Tourism and Culture, the George Cross Island Association and the Gasan Group.
Maltese Abstract Paintings
The Ministry for Tourism and Culture in collaboration with Heritage Malta will be exhibiting a collection of Maltese Abstract paintings. The exhibition will be open from 6.00pm to 4.00am
Time for Architecture 3
An exhibition of contemporary Maltese architecture coordinated by Kamra tal-Periti will also be displayed at the Auberge d’Italie from 6pm to 4am.
China Beyond Graphics Exhibition
The China Cultural Centre in Melita Street will be hosting an exhibition of Chinese graphic designs illuminating the country’s path to development over the past two decades. Posters, logos, packaging, book covers and designs for the 2008 Beijing Olympics will also be showcased.
