PN Questions BA member’s impartiality

Malta Independent Wednesday, 24 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The Nationalist Party wondered yesterday about the impartiality of former Reno Borg, a member of the Broadcasting Authority, and implied that the authority was losing its grip.

It said it noted the speeches and biased writings by Dr Borg, including what he said on Monday on the Labour Party’s station. In that programme, the PN said, Dr Borg had eulogised the MLP leader and party, and criticised the media for “not carrying” what Dr Sant said.

The PN said Dr Borg’s writings and speeches, with all the prejudice he was showing against the party, the praises for Dr Sant and the Labour Party, and the criticisms of the media, cast doubt about how impartial Dr Borg could be in discussions at the authority, and decisions taken.

It added that while Dr Borg was appearing on a TV station to praise the Labour leader, a programme which should have been held at the same time on the state-funded PBS to analyse Dr Sant’s comments on the budget, had been banned by the authority.

While the authority had stopped the PBS programme, the PN said, it saw nothing wrong in one of its members appearing on an MLP station to praise Dr Sant and the Labour Party.

The PN said certain BA decisions were already raising doubts. What Reno Borg was doing, and the pressure being exerted by Jason Micallef, MLP general secretary, on the BA, made these doubts more serious.
