Seminar On role of market makers

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The American Chamber of Commerce – Malta will be holding the second in a series of seminars entitled “The Role of Market Makers in a Stock Exchange”.

The main speaker at this seminar will be John P. O’Shea, a member of the New York Stock Exchange and chairman and chief executive officer at the Westminster Securities Corporation.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday at 8.15am in the conference hall of the Malta Stock Exchange in Valletta.

Mr O’Shea will open the discussion by explaining the traditional role of the market maker and the fact that it is becoming a vanishing function. The potential disappearance of the market maker is one clear example of the constantly changing nature of the market. Other topics to be discussed include electronic trading and its rising impact on US and international markets, as well as some of the challenges and difficulties of navigating an electronic market.

Mr O’Shea will give his opinion on how he sees the Malta Stock Exchange can best grow internationally.

Mr O’Shea joined Westminster Securities Corporation in 1987. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in January 1997, named president in September 1998 and appointed CEO in 2005.

Further information can be obtained from Dorianne Bonanno at the Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise on 2124 7233 or at [email protected].
