Where Hip-hop marries ballet

Malta Independent Sunday, 18 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be performed as never before as it will be transferred to a modern scenario having two totally different dance disciplines – classical ballet and street dance – representing the two different families, the Capulets and Montagues. Sergei Prokofiev’s fascinating music was chosen and modified accordingly. The production boasts of approximately 100 participants dressed in delightful costumes that will relate the well-known story in drama, song and dance.

The choreography is by Ian Mackenzie Stewart, ABBO, who was the world champion in Highland dancing and is famous throughout the world of dance, especially at the West End. Juliet will be played by Emma Marion Lister, a principal dancer with the English Youth Ballet. Marlyn Letaga will be playing Romeo. He has held the title of national champion of street dance for the past five years. The production will be directed by Zep Camilleri. Mandy’s Dance Academy and Waterfall Dancers are the producers.
