An elderly man was in a critical condition after the car he was driving slammed into an electricity pole on the Siggiewi bypass.

In a statement, the police said the accident took place at about 3pm. The car involved was a Maruti Omni, driven by a 74-year-old from Siggiewi.

The elderly man was removed from the car with the help of members of the Department of Civil Protection. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance where he was certified to be suffering from serious injuries and was placed on the danger list.

Duty magistrate Anthony Vella appointed a number of experts to assist in an onsite inquiry.
