Nationalist Government creating more work and better work

Malta Independent Friday, 23 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

“More and better work. This is the government’s policy led by the Nationalist Party. And results are being achieved. Both local and foreign investment is on the increase, therefore more jobs are being created for workers. At the same time more work is being created for the self-employed because investment in our country creates work for small and medium sized businesses. All this means there is less unemployment,” deputy prime minister Tonio Borg told the annual general meeting of Workers’ Solidarity.

Political success is measured by the opportunities being created for the Maltese and Gozitan people and the improvement of the quality of life. When Lawrence Gonzi became Prime Minister three years ago he placed work, together with education and the environment, as the three main pillars upon which he would build the Nationalist government’s policies, he said.

The government has taken many initiatives to leave more money in the workers’ and families’ pockets. Income tax has been reduced during two consecutive years. The Children’s Allowance has increased and is being given for all children. A minimum of Lm107 is being given for each boy and girl. Low-earners receive a higher children’s allowance, he added.

“Alfred Sant and the Labour Party have always opposed all the new measures being taken in our country,” Dr Borg said. “They were against the liberalisation of telecommunication which today has created many new jobs, they were against the sale of Mid-Med to HSBC, whose International Call Centre is creating 500 job opportunities; Alfred Sant was sceptic about SmartCity which is going to create another 5,600 jobs. Labour’s leader is consistent in the wrong decisions he makes for our country and has no concrete plan for the creation of new jobs.”
