APS Bank’s next concert in its current flagship cycle of Grand Masses of the 19th Century is to be held on Thursday, November 29 at 7.30 pm. at St. John’s Co-Cathedral.It will feature Messa Solenne (1827) by Pietro Paolo Bugeja (1772-1828) for soli, chorus and orchestra with the participation of Anita Vella Bondin (Soprano), Connie Francis Zerafa (Mezzo soprano), Joseph Aquilina (Tenor), Anthony Montebello (Bass),The Mirabitur Choir (Choirmistress: Simone Attard),The Jubal Orchestra (Leader: Mario Bisazza) and conducted by Rev. Pietro Paolo Bugeja, who was born in Valletta on April 29, 1772, has continued to be held in high esteem even after his death.

A composer anchored in the classical manner, there are indications of earlier usages especially in his liturgical music such as the Messa Solenne and his admirable settings of Jeremiah’s lamentation Recordare (1800) and the Benediction hymn O Salutaris Hostia, still justly popular, and outstanding examples of the late 18th century Italian cantata da chiesa. His many other works include the oratorio Gioas, Re di Guda (1813), Improperi per il Venerdì Santo (1804); Responsori del Giovedì Santo (1819).

He died in Valletta on 12 June 1828.
