Winston Hassall At Gallery G

Malta Independent Sunday, 25 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Besides classical Maltese scenes carried out in watercolour, Winston Hassall likes to experiment in different mediums and styles. It is not unusual for him to overlay a perfectly executed scene, which would not be to his liking with a totally different piece of art. Over the years he has matured in his art through his perseverance and experimentation. One cannot fault Winston for churning out the same style of art year in year out. For through his evolution he has gone from classical watercolours to quasi-impressionistic abstract paintings using mixed media with a thick impasto. On the walls in his Valletta studio, one can view all styles of Winston’s evolutionary trip - abstract, impressionistic and classical – carried out in various mediums and colours that surely prove Winston’s creativity and versatility.

Winston is a nature person - he has a passion for stones with strange shapes sculpted by nature. From these, he gets many of his ideas for some of his abstract paintings and sometimes he also includes them in one of his Maltese scenes. Winston is a self-taught artist, however, he had attended nude sessions at the School of Art, The Society of Art and to nude sessions organised by Alfred Briffa.

Over the past two years, he has joined a sort of Artists Club made up of a number of well-established artists. During the day, one would find Winston at his desk in his studio concentrating on a painting or if the studio is closed, having a drink at one of his many haunts in Valletta.

His current exhibition of paintings at Gallery G Inspirations & Reflections delivers a varied example of Winston’s capabilities and versatility. He presents sconces in oil, watercolour, acrylic and mixed media as well as classical style and more aggressive paintings delivered in thick colourful impasto.

Gallery G is hosting Winston Hassall’s works until 7 December. This exhibition is being sponsored by Attard & Co. with Goiya Wines, Charts Investment Management Service Ltd, Photocity, Bank of Valletta, Showmix and D-Office Wine Bar and Diner.
