A highly illustrated lecture by Dennis Vella, organised by Din l-Art Helwa in their autumn cycle of cultural presentations, will discuss ‘Antonio Sciortino and his Influences’.

Dennis Vella, who has done extensive study and research on the sculptor, Antonio Sciortino, will attempt to broaden our understanding of the stylistic development of the artist through comparative examples of other artists, of whose work he is likely to have been aware. Sciortino, having been based in Rome for over 35 years, is also known to have been a well-travelled artist. It would have been fairly easy for him to visit most of the major Salons in Great Britain and the Continent of Europe, and this would have ensured that he kept abreast of the latest styles and developments in mainstream, if not avant-garde art, of the time. The lecture will therefore chart Sciortino’s progress from Academic to Impressionistic to Art Nouveau and Art Deco sculpture in line with European and American developments.

The Lecture will take place at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall on Thursday 6 December, at 133 Melita Street, Valletta, at the offices of Din l-Art Helwa at 6pm. Participants are advised to be seated by 5.45 pm. Admission is free of charge, but donations to Din l-Art Helwa’s restoration projects would be most welcome.
