The highly regarded 1572 painting depicting The Flagellation of Christ by Florentine artist Stefano Pieri, has been returned to its traditional home in the main sacristy of St John’s Co-Cathedral.
The six-month restoration has revealed some extraordinary features.
The St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, which works hard to generate revenue to be used for the conservation, maintenance and restoration of the building and its numerous works of art, was able to commence work on The Flagellation in December of last year, thanks to the support of the Le Méridien Phoenicia hotel, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation and the generosity of the public.
The foundation will be giving a lecture on the restoration of this painting, in the sacristy of St John’s Co-Cathedral, on Saturday at 10am. The public is invited to attend.
