Sport Should not be a political football – MLP

Malta Independent Tuesday, 11 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Labour Party yesterday criticised the Nationalist Party for using sports for partisan politics. A new PN candidate, it said, who enjoyed the support of the Prime Minister, was using sports for partisan motives.

Labour MPs Carmelo Abela, main spokesman on education, culture and youth, and Justyn Caruana, spokesman for youth, sport and culture, said Pippo Psaila, who was still on the Malta Olympic Committee, was using information he had to contact sports persons and their relatives. This had happened on two occasions at least, and it was not right, they said.

Sports, the party spokesmen said, should not become a partisan political football.
