The number of confirmed influenza cases continues to increase, but clinical influenza activity in most of Europe remains low, according to the European Influenza Surveillance Scheme, which monitors influenza activity across the European Union.
In a statement, the Department of Health made a renewed appeal to the general public on the need to be vaccinated against seasonal influenza.
Among the factors contributing to the increase in influenza cases are the holidays over the festive season. The situation over recent years has shown that the peak activity of influenza occurs after the New Year period.
The Department of Primary Health is now offering the seasonal influenza vaccine free of charge to everyone at Primary Health Centres’ immunisation units.
Patients must have their identity cards available.
