Opposition Leader Alfred Sant will be fit for an electoral campaign, even if called in the near future, his surgeon said yesterday.

Addressing the media at the main entrance to the Mater Dei Hospital, surgeon Anthony Zammit said the Labour leader would be ready to enter the foray of an electoral campaign after a resting period of 25 days from the day of the operation.

Dr Sant underwent a major operation on Thursday, at the end of which Mr Zammit said that Dr Sant would remain in hospital for 10 days.

After visiting Dr Sant yesterday, Mr Zammit, flanked by the MLP deputy leaders Charles Mangion and Michael Falzon, together with secretary general Jason Micallef, told the media the 59-year-old Opposition Leader would need another fortnights rest after leaving hospital.

After this, Mr Zammit said, Dr Sant would be ready to embark on an election campaign.

Dr Sant could leave home earlier if he felt well, he added.

Mr Zammit confirmed that no post-operation test results had been issued, implying that speculation about Dr Sant’s condition were still superfluous.

The surgeon confirmed that no complications have arisen and that “the patient was in an excellent state, as was his morale”.

“His mind is set on his work and the party,” he said, adding that he was surprised by Dr Sant’s recovery. Although he knew him medically, Mr Zammit described Dr Sant’s healing powers as “phenomenal”.

Both Dr Mangion and Dr Falzon thanked the Maltese people for their show of support towards Dr Sant at this time of difficulty.
