A 29-year-old Somali was yesterday jailed for a year suspended for two years after pleading guilty to slightly injuring a 51-year-old woman while robbing her of her bag.

Kamil Hasan Hamsa, who resides in Valletta, also pleaded guilty to pushing the woman to the ground, stealing more than e232.92 (Lm100), causing less than e232.92 (Lm100) in damages to her and breaching the peace.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Silvio Meli, heard how Hasan injured the woman on Tuesday at 6am at St Julian’s while trying to steal her bag. He pushed her to the ground and started kicking her. As a consequence she ended up with broken spectacles and slight injuries, including bruises on her chest and head.

Hamsa promised to pay for the damaged glasses. Police inspector Carlo Ellul prosecuted while Dr Patrick Valentino was legal aid to Hamsa.
