Il-Majjistral Park was on Sunday handed over to three environmental NGOs: Din L-Art Helwa, Gaia Foundation and Nature Trust.

The park, which stretches along the coast from Golden Bay to Anchor Bay in the limits of Mellieha, is estimated to be five times the size of Valletta and includes coastal cliffs and several historical and archaeological sites.

Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino, who signed the agreement with the NGOs on Sunday, said the park is a living example of the government’s commitment to improve the environment and increase the recreational spaces for Maltese families.

He pointed out that the government was constantly collaborating with NGOs who, through their voluntary work, were carrying out useful work for the environment. A plan to regulate activities that take place in the park – the first of its kind in Malta – is undergoing the finishing touches.

In September, the managerial board together with the ministry and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority submitted a project proposal for funding under Axis 2 of the Operational Programme 1 of the Structural Funds Programme for Malta, 2007 – 2013.

Mr Pullicino explained that, if this project is approved, the park will benefit from over e2.9 million in investments for the rehabilitation of the site, creation of a visitors’ centre, and restoration of the archeological sites, rubble walls and natural environment.

Present for the activity was also Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
