MLP Resorting to ‘strategy of lies’ – PN

Malta Independent Saturday, 9 February 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The Nationalist Party yesterday accused the Labour Party of again resorting to lies, as it had done at the last general election. Five years ago, the PN said, the people had been bombarded with lies about the European Union.

On Super 1 Radio, MLP spokesman Manwel Cuschieri is dishing out lies and deceit to confuse people. The MLP has come out with the lie that the PN will raise VAT. This was a recycled lie from other campaigns, the PN said. It was Alfred Sant’s government which had removed VAT and introduced the CET tax of up to 29 per cent.

The PN said the Labour Party was lying when it said that a Nationalist government would introduce fees for health services. The PN in government was guaranteeing the best health services for free, as it had always done. It was Dr Sant’s government which introduced taxes on services related to health, including a tax on medicines and another on sickness certificates. These had been removed by the Nationalist government.

Another lie by the MLP is that a Nationalist government would weaken social services. The Nationalist government had in recent years hugely improved social services, including children’s allowances, pensions, increases for widows and disabled people, and benefits on power bills for families with a low income.

Mr Cuschieri was also saying that a Nationalist government would raise the tax on overtime.

But on the contrary a Nationalist government will reduce income tax.
