The BOV Environment Seminar held last week at the San Gorg Corinthia Hotel in St Julian’s tackled the challenging topic of Waste Management and its implications for Maltese industry and society at large.

The seminar, which attracted over 100 delegates representing a wide cross section of organisations within the industry, was organised in conjunction with the Malta Business Bureau. Dr Simone Borg, Legal Consultant specialising in Environmental and Natural Resources Law and Occupational Health and Safety Law, chaired the seminar. A number of different topics related to waste management were presented to the audience by a distinguished panel of local and international speakers. Issues such as Producers Responsibility were discussed with focus on the obligations of producers to register with the competent authorities, as well as the setting up of systems for collection and recycling of waste.

High on the agenda was the issue of tapping EU funding opportunities and how organisations can make existing products greener and create new eco-products. Other sessions focused on the collection of packaging waste as well as the opportunities provided by Bank of Valletta to the industry in terms of its financial offering. Ing. Walter Hauer, an Austrian independent consultant on waste management, also addressed the conference.
