Opposition Leader Alfred Sant yesterday hinted that the Labour party might reveal other cases of corruption involving ministers later on this week.

Dr Sant made this statement during an interview by Simone Cini on One TV yesterday morning.

If there is someone in a government department who is corrupt, then the responsible minister is also corrupt because he would have closed his eyes to the situation, said Dr Sant.

He said that there have been several attempts to cause trouble by the Nationalist Party and described it as puerile. He called on the people to ignore these provocations and repeated that it is a quiet and tranquil election campaign.

Especially where the environment is concerned, a Labour government will focus on Malta’s natural environment – such as Buskett – and give it a boost.

The Opposition Leader said that the Labour party will focus on promoting alternative energy.

“Malta is among the lowest when compared to other countries who use alternative energy,” said Dr Sant.

However, he explained that a Labour government is proposing measures that will promote development while safeguarding the environment.

The Opposition Leader also spoke about the importance of waste separation at source.

He pointed out that even though new regulations for construction were recently introduced, very often these are not followed.

Dr Sant said that a commission needs to be set up to ensure that the financial services sector gets an extra boost over a 10 year plan.

There are not enough graduates to work in this sector, along with nursing and doctors, due to a lack of the Nationalist government’s foresight, he added.

The government needs to give a guarantee that Air Malta will remain a pillar in the local economy, he said. “Malta needs its national airline to help the tourism – a strategy needs to be developed to allow it to grow and help the economy.”
