Networking For growth

Malta Independent Sunday, 23 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Networking is about giving more and receiving less. This is one of the important principles learnt by the 43 participants who attended the Kintish Experience, a full-day seminar on networking organised by MGI Finconsult Ltd.

“Networking is all about building relationships which will enhance one’s business-making potential,” said Will Kintish, a world-known authority on networking skills. Networking skills are also essential for enhancing one’s social life. How often has one been at a social function without knowing practically anyone? The skills taught at this seminar addressed such situations.

Mr Kintish showed delegates how to read a room full of people where most of these would be strangers to you. He also showed them how to work such a room in a confident and effective manner, how to break into groups of people already engaged in conversation between themselves, and how to follow up potential opportunities with a professional and positive approach.

The Kintish Experience delivered several practical tips on networking such as how to impress people you meet and therefore build more relationships. An important principle emphasized by Mr Kintish was that of the “two ears one mouth”, i.e. that if one wants to impress, one should listen more than one talks. People just love to talk about themselves, he emphasized, and therefore listening to them talk will not only help us understand them better, but more importantly, make them like us more. And, as people prefer to do business with people they like, this can create new potential business opportunities.

“This proved to be a positive experience to each of the participants, not only on a business level but also on a social level, prompting some to request a repeat performance in the near future. Mr. Kintish has also been requested to hold in house seminars. In fact he was in demand for the whole week he was in Malta by companies considered to be leaders in their field on the island,” said George Farrugia, director at MGI Finconsult Ltd.
