‘Tree Of Life’ for a greener future

Malta Independent Monday, 24 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Casorenzo Art Studio has launched its Tree of Life project with the support of Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) and Oasi Foundation.

The project, which is sponsored by Faber Castell, was launched during an event at the Birzebbuga promenade gardens on Wednesday.

The event saw the participation of a number of Casorenzo Art Studio junior students, along with young passers-by who designed and painted colourful leaf shapes, which were then stuck onto a large Tree of Life billboard.

Discarded material was used throughout the event and recycled into beautiful artistic cameos of creativity. The most welcome endorsement of the children’s enthusiasm for environmental responsibility was the eager participation of their parents.

To mark the event, Nature Trust Malta supplied two olive trees which were planted at the Birzebbugia promenade gardens. A carved stone plaque commemorating young artists’ involvement in the greening of Malta was also unveiled during the event.

With a backdrop of jazz music played live by Norman Cristina, the children not only enjoyed themselves, but also raised money to fund Casorenzo’s much larger environmental ambitions.

Together with the environment NGO Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, and with the cooperation of the Environment Ministry, Casorenzo is aiming to have a big event to plant more indigenous trees in the autumn of this year. The event is planned to take place at Wied Blandun in Fgura, one of Malta’s most polluted areas.

Wednesday’s event was all about the children who represent a tremendous promise for Malta’s future, responding enthusiastically to artist Caroline S. Lawrence’s message about each individual taking personal responsibility for protecting and sustaining the balance of the eco-system.

This was rewarded with prizes kindly donated by Faber Castell and the Birzebbugia Local Council, while the Tree of Life billboard, now blazing with dozens of beautifully painted leaves, is a flag to be treasured by all those who value the multifaceted beauty of Malta’s environment.

Casorenzo’s initiative will not only plant locally-grown trees near urban areas suffering the effects of air pollution; it will also raise funds for the social and environmental work being carried out by Oasi and FAA.

Casorenzo invites all those interested in these issues to make donations to the Tree of Life fund at NHSBC 470 8821 6001. Receipts will be sent to all donors.
