Manufacturing Sales down in 2007

Sales by the sampled manufacturing enterprises registered an increase of Lm109.6 million (e255.3 million) between 2005 and 2006 and a decrease of Lm23.5 million (e54.7 million) between 2006 and 2007, the National Statistics Office reported yesterday.

Between 2005 and 2006, higher sales were mainly registered in the radio, TV and communication equipment by Lm110.5 million (e257.5 million), in the chemicals and chemical products by Lm23.9 million (e55.7 million) and in the furniture and manufacturing (not elsewhere classified) sub-sector by Lm3.6 million (e8.3 million). During the same period, the electrical machinery and apparatus sub-sector registered a decrease in sales of Lm10.6 million (e24.7 million). Decreases in sales were also registered in the food and beverages; tobacco sub-sector by Lm8.8 million (e20.4 million) and in the wearing apparel and clothes sub-sector by Lm5.1 million (e12.0 million).

During the 2006-2007 period, the main increases in sales were registered in the Chemicals and chemical products sub-sector registered by Lm22.2 million (e51.7million) and in the electrical machinery and apparatus sub-sector by Lm11.8 million (e27.5 million). For the same period, the radio, TV and communication equipment sub-sector registered the highest decrease in sales by Lm32.6 million (e76.0 million). Other decreases in sales were registered in the food and beverages; tobacco sub-sector by Lm26.9 million (e62.6 million) due mainly to the tobacco sub-sector, and the wearing apparel and clothes sub-sector by Lm6.1 million ( e14.2 million).

Employment, Wages and Salaries

Average employment in the sampled manufacturing enterprises declined by 995 employees from 2005 to 2006 and by 372 employees from 2006 to 2007. During the course of this 3-year span the main average net decreases in employment were recorded in the wearing apparel and clothes, the textiles and textiles products and the food and beverages; tobacco sub-sectors. The main average net increases in employment were registered in the electrical machinery and apparatus, the chemicals and chemical products and the radio, TV and communication equipment sub-sectors.

Between 2005 and 2006 wages and salaries increased by 0.5 per cent to Lm119.7 million (e278.8 million) from Lm119.1 million (e277.4 million) and by 2.2 per cent to Lm122.3 million (e284.9 million) between 2006 and 2007.

Investment

Overall investment rose by 19.5 per cent between 2005 and 2006 from Lm49.9 million (e116.3 million) to Lm59.7 million (e139.0 million) and by 21.5 per cent to Lm72.5 million (e168.9 million) between 2006 and 2007.

Average earnings and turnover per capita

Average earnings per capita in the sampled manufacturing enterprises increased by 5.9 per cent between 2005 and 2006 from Lm6,132 (e14,285) to Lm6,496 (e15,131) and by 4.3 per cent to Lm6,776 (e15,784) between 2006 and 2007.

Between 2005 and 2006, the rate of average turnover per capita in the sampled manufacturing enterprises registered an increase of 17.8 per cent from Lm48,114 (e112,076) to Lm56,662 (e131,987), yet registered a decrease of 0.2 per cent to Lm56,529 (e131,678) between 2006 and 2007.
