PM Praises flexibility of Maltese workers

Malta Independent Thursday, 1 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had words of praise for the Maltese workers, who were able and flexible, adapting themselves to the country’s economic changes.

He was speaking during a visit to Dedicated Micros, to mark Workers’ Day, accompanied by Dennis Vella, from the Solidarjeta Haddiema of the PN, and Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Tonio Fenech.

The workers, he said, were the key to the country’s success, for it to remain competitive, and he praised companies such as Dedicated Micros which helped their employees to train.

The Maltese people and the workers should not be afraid to be ambitious and aim high, Dr Gonzi said. The more ambitious we were the more value added products we could produce.

He laid stress on the need for flexibility and training, and pointed out that Dedicated Micros was the best example of this – the company employed many who used to work in the textiles sector, with Denim, VF and Bortex. A woman employee worked in textiles for 26 years and today, after being trained, was in the electronics sector with Dedicated Micros.

Noel Micallef, operations director, said the Malta plant had the company’s world production.

Two months ago the company started producing security cameras, producing 2,000 cameras in the first month and aiming to double that in the second.
