Air Malta has added Leipzig Halle as its sixth destination to its German schedule portfolio. The airline expects that in the initial six months, this new route will bring to Malta over 11,000 new tourists. The prospects are very positive as last Sunday’s inaugural flight from Leipzig to Malta was completely full.
Air Malta launched this new schedule service, following the positive results it achieved on all its German routes throughout this winter (November – March).
Commenting on this new route, Dr Brock Friesen, chief officer commercial Air Malta said, “Air Malta was encouraged by the strong performance it has registered throughout this winter on its core routes, particularly the German market, where we carried over 84,000 passengers – a dramatic increase of 33 per cent over the previous winter. Air Malta is consistently generating substantial new traffic into Malta with positive direct impact on the tourism industry.”
Describing the airline’s performance on the German routes for this winter, Dr Friesen revealed that on Munich the airline increased its passengers by 70 per cent, Frankfurt +30 per cent, Berlin +20 per cent, Dusseldorf +4 per cent and Hamburg +1 per cent. The development of this new Leipzig route will enhance the airline’s market reach in eastern Germany, he added.
“Flight timings have been selected so that customers can avail themselves of a short break or a summer holiday to discover the beauty and attractions our islands have to offer. Air Malta is also aware of the cargo business development in Leipzig. The airport has also established itself in the carriage of air cargo, courier services and freight possibilities,” Dr Friesen said.
The Wednesday flight departs Malta International Airport at 4.10pm arriving in Leipzig at 6.55pm while the Sunday flight departs at 7ams and arrives in Leipzig at 9.45am. The return flight on Wednesdays departs Leipzig at 7.40pm, arriving in Malta at 10.25pm while the Sunday flight departs at 10.35am and arrives in Malta at 1.20pm.
Leipzig is located in heart of the Saxony Region and is a buzzing destination for trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions. Moreover, it is a centre for culture, nightlife and shopping. The city boasts remarkable Renaissance and Baroque buildings, historical commercial buildings and arcades that provide the ideal setting for sightseeing or shopping. Leipzig also offers a wealth of art and culture at venues such as the Gewandhaus concert hall and the opera house with the St Thomas’ choir, as well as numerous cabaret shows, theatres and jazz bars. Music reigns in Leipzig, where Bach and Mendelssohn’s former residences are now museums.
Leipzig Airport has a railway station which links directly to Leipzig’s inner city and to Halle (Saale) city with other regional connections to the nearby cities of Magdeburg and Dresden. An unusual feature of the airport is the adjoining Porsche auto plant, and special visitor facilities.
