Golden Cross International Singing Festival 2008: Turkish Singer wins contest

The 5th edition of the Golden Cross International Singing Festival was held between 21 and 23 July at the Citadel Centre for Culture and the Arts in Victoria.

A pre-festival show was held on 19 July at Xlendi Bay. This show served as an attraction for hundreds of Maltese and tourists who visit this picturesque bay at this time of year.

An International Cultural Evening was held on one of the festival days where there was typical food from the countries participating together with music and singing. The festival motto was peace and friendship through music and art.

Thirty-eight songs were competing in this festival which were divided into five categories.

Results

The Grand Prix winning song is Alone, singer Nilay Tezsay from Turkey, lyrics written by Figen Cakmak and composed by Fani Hodara.

Category A

First Place – Diana Michaela Formosa with the song Colours of the Wind.

Second Place – Elaine Haber with the song Bhal Mozart Maestro.

Third Place – Enya Magri with the song Arawni.

Category B

First Place – Antoine Farrugia with the song Semmaghli Ghanja.

Second Place – Ioana-Teodara Scriosteano (Romania) with the song Mother & Father from Heaven.

Third Place – Mikaela Bajada with the song Little Little Love.

Category C

First Place – Michaela Galea with the song Xejn Aktar Prezzjuz.

Second Place – Antonella Rapa with the song Hemm Anke Jien.

Third Place – Francesca Sciberras with the song Perderei l’Amore.

Category D

First Place – Charlene Muscat with the song Hurt.

Second Place – Jorje Bosios with the song Mercy.

Third Place – Albertine Abela with the song Erga Lura.

Category E

First Place – Crechet (Belarus) with the song Forever and One.

Second Place – Rolf Roosalu (Estonia) with the song Your Angel Eyes.

Third Place – Lindsay Lee Zarb with the song Take My Hand.

The prize for Best Choreography was won by the singer Martha Galea with the song Vive La Vie.

The prize for Best Public Opinion was won by the singer Whitney Cremona & Jody Magri with the song Abjad fuq l-Iswed.

The prize for Best New Song was won by the singer Dian Bland with the song Detached.

All songs were of high quality. Talitha, the winner of Grand Prix 2007 and Teen Age 4 were guest singers during the show.

Dancing shows were presented by Anette’s Mystic Dancers, Art Alive, JA Dancers and Centre Stage. Gabriella, Christian and Alexia were also guests during the show and they also hosted the festival.
