HSBC Facilitates music appreciation in Gozo

As part of its ongoing scheme to support specific projects in connection with the environment, culture and education in local councils, HSBC has sponsored the Youth Section of the Santa Marija Philharmonic Society of Zebbug, Gozo to run a course on deeper appreciation and knowledge of music. The project is part of the European Union’s Youth in Action Programme, in collaboration with the Gozo Ministry and the Zebbug Local Council.

The course, Adventures in Music, is running over a number of summer weeks and comes to an end in September. Coordinated by Mro Joseph Grech, the programme consists of talks, discussions and musical performances covering classical, sacred, orchestral and folkloristic music and how this has developed over the centuries.

Part of the project also gives tribute to Mro Antonio Mallia who is known among the community in Zebbug for his contributions to foster a sound musical education and for setting up the locality’s own orchestra in difficult times after the war.

“HSBC supports these initiatives which fulfil a number of aims which the Bank is associated with in its work for the community,” said Richard Mercieca, HSBC’s Gozo Area Director. “This programme is a case in point which not only facilitates musical education for the younger generation and the public in general, but also brings to life the achievement of people who made history in music and pass it on to future generations.”
