Malta Independent Wednesday, 10 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Maltese dance community is celebrating its 50th year of running exams in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus which is renowned for its technical excellence in Classical Dance. Since its first years under the direction of Lillian Attard, the RAD in Malta has gone from strength to strength and is currently established in nine fully fledged dance schools throughout Malta and Gozo.

To celebrate the occasion, the RAD is holding its first ever Dance Live In where students will be able to indulge their love of dance during five intensive days of classical and jazz dance, rhythm, drama and body conditioning classes. In recognition of this special event, the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Dance, Lynn Wallis, will be present throughout the course and will also offer classes for the teachers and the advanced students. Jill Firth is one of the RAD’s internationally appointed touring tutors who has been invited to lead the Ballet classes during the summer school.

The RAD in Malta is also proud to number among its teachers some of the best trainers and artists in their field working locally. Mary Jane Bellia, Caroline Busuttil, Lucienne Camilleri, Jason Fabri and Emma Loftus have all become household names in the performing arts community in Malta and will be teaching classes in Repertoire, Drama, Body Conditioning, Rhythm and Jazz Dance in the Summer school.

An understanding of music is considered an integral part of the ability to dance and to this end, two of the best local music teachers and accompanying pianists have been asked to join the RAD summer live in. Norma Camilleri and Yvette Galea will both be accompanying ballet classes on the piano.
