The Year 6 boys were the first children to cook in our school’s brand new kitchen.
Friday 24 October was an unforgettable day for Year 6 at St Albert the Great School in Valletta as two of the teachers helped eight boys cook the scrumptious froga tat-tarja! The rest of the Year 6 boys were the clients of this impromptu restaurant.
Mr Etienne, the class teacher, together with Ms Josephine, the class learning assistant, discussed the ingredients and the method with the boys. The boys were well prepared to discuss the recipe since they had been involved in a number of pre-activities and writing tasks in association with Maltese Traditional Food as part of their second year of the EEK Comenius Project.
Il-froga tat-tarja was chosen by the year six children because this kind of omelet shows a little of the Italian influence in Maltese cooking. In fact, there are similar dishes called frittati di spaghetti in Sicily, Malta’s neighbour. However, in the Mediterranean region, many variations of this recipe can be found, and have been devised for using up left-over boiled spaghetti. The boys made a number of medium sized omelettes and the results were admirable.
Integrating the Comenius activities has become part of the curriculum in our school. Through thematic lessons, graded activities, art and craft, writing tasks and cookery sessions, the children are becoming aware of trouble-free Maltese recipes which form part of our own culture and heritage.
The eight budding chefs were also asked to write their own reports of this enjoyable cooking experience.
