Hamrun Local council undertakes works at ‘is-Suq l-Antik’ site

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information Chris Said on Friday visited works at the site known as is-Suq l-Antik in Duke of Edinburgh Street, Hamrun.

The project is being undertaken by the Hamrun local council and includes a parking of around 160 vehicles, a public garden and new administrative offices for the Hamrun local council.

Dr Said described the project as an ambitious one, an investment for the Hamrun community and one which goes well with the locality’s environment, residents and the commercial community. The parking should decrease traffic and parking problems in the area. The project itself will be rehabilitating a site which was no longer in use while financing itself.

The Hamrun local council plans to use energy saving measures in the project’s furnishings along principles of the Switch campaign which has the aim of encouraging everyone to make more efficient use of energy.

The site known as is-Suq l-Antik was passed over to the Hamrun local council by a devolution act in 2008 in order for the local council to make better use of the site for the benefit of residents.
