Malta Independent Saturday, 4 April 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Representatives of Hamrun local council led by Mayor Vincent Bonello have visited Carpineto Romano in Italy for the signing of a twinning agreement between the two towns.

Contacts between Hamrun and Carpineto Romano, a hilly Italian village 70 kilometres south of Rome, were established six years ago when a local youth association, Villaggio Europa from Carpineto Romano showed interest in participating in an exchange with Hamrun local council during the annual feast of St Gaetan in Hamrun. During this project funded by Youth in Action Programme of EUPA, 10 young people from four countries participated in the preparations for the festa of 2003.

The following year a group of youths from Hamrun council led by then councillor Omar Bugeja, participated in another exchange, this time in Carpineto Romano. In the following years young people from both towns met in other exchanges abroad thanks to the cooperation of their local youth organizations.

As contacts grew the municipality of Carpineto Romano and the Hamrun council decided that it would be culturally and socially beneficial for both communities to make a twinning agreement under the auspices of the EU programmes. Finally a delegation from Hamrun was invited to visit Carpineto Romano as guests of the municipality to sign the formal agreement.
